THE IMPORTANCE OF FASTING

“Then John’s disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often,
but your disciples do not fast?”Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom
mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from
them; then they will fast.” Matthew 9:14-15

In this verse we see Jesus using an analogy well suited to the time, because after the
wedding the groom would retire to organize his house to receive his bride, after which he
would return and seek her to take her home. This is how it is with Jesus, we are in this
waiting period, waiting for Him to come back for us.

And it is in this waiting period that Jesus commands us to fast, for fasting brings our focus to
Him. Fasting resurrects this passion, this desire for the Bridegroom. This is one of the main
focuses of fasting, of creating and developing intimacy with our God.

In several texts of the Bible, we see it drawing our attention to the great moment when we
are going to meet the Bridegroom. So it is in this waiting period that we should be longing
and longing for Him. And this is developed out of fasting, which is why fasting must be part
of our lifestyle!

We should look forward to that deep relationship with the Lord so that we can live eternally
with Him, having a beautiful and powerful adventure in eternity!

Let’s go together on this journey in search for the Groom!
